MANY years ago, the 83 Y 261 Crystal Radio Kit was my first effort in kit building. That was followed by many years of love for radio, a ham ticket that I still proudly hold (N4BOS) and a degree in Physics. Since my original radio is long gone, I would love to build another as a trip down memory lane. I have the manual for the radio but it has no specs as to coil diameter or variable capacitor value. If anyone has that information (or PERHAPS an unbuilt kit), I would LOVE to get the information.

Steve,
The 83Y261 used a 1½“ x 5” coil form. The kit came with 55’ of No. 22 enamel wire. The primary was 20 turns close wound (~1/2” long), separated from the tapped secondary by 3/16”. The secondary was 105 to 110 turns or ~3.125” in length with the first “center tap” @ 30 turns in from the primary end of the coil. Additional taps (optionally) could be placed @ the 60 & 90 turn points to adjust the sensitivity and selectivity of the crystal set.
Their “Complete Parts List” listed the variable capacitor as “381.4 mmfd midget single gang condenser” but as I recall when I measured mine, it measured 365 uF. (May have been a parts substation by Allied ?)
The diode was a 1N34 and connected between one of the 4 Fahnestock clips (headphones to gnd.) and the secondary tap. The cathode end of the diode connected to the coil.
The radio was mounted on a 4 1/2 “ x 6” x 3/8” plywood base.
